Oceanside's Shoots Fish & Beer and The Plot vegan restaurant have both opened new locations in San Diego North County city of Carlsbad.
Last fall, Oceanside-based sister concepts Shoots Fish & Beer and The Plot plant-based restaurant signed on to install within the newly-renovation The Cottages on Roosevelt property in Carlsbad, which consists of three distinct cottage buildings ranging from 907-982 square-feet of space with 2,000 square-feet of shared outdoor seating. Also opening in the compound this week is a new location of sister concepts Stella Jean's Ice Cream, as well as a cafe from Oceanside-based Revolution Roasters and a retail store from Pack Rat Records & Junk.
Opened in late 2021 as the food component of Oceanside's BottleCraft branch, Shoots Fish x Beer is operated by builder-designer Chris Slowey of design firm CLTVT, professional surfer Cheyne Magnuson, and branding pro Mike Weeks. The restaurant's seafood-focused menu is the product of Wrench & Rodent founder Chef Davin Waite, who also operates The Whet Noodle, plant-based The Plot, and recently unveiled Brine Box, all sited in Oceanside. Chef Davin's The Plot, which he opened with his wife Jessica in early 2020, focuses on plant-based, zero-waste dishes made with plants rather than vegan faux proteins.
At the new Shoots, like the original branch, expect a menu of seafood tacos, poke bowl options and daily market specials, all made with fresh sustainable seafood. To compliment the food, there is a menu of beers brewed by Alesmith Brewery made to pair with specific dishes served at the eatery, including a Japanese lager made with rice.
The Plot Express will have a compact seasonal vegan menu from Jessica Waite, who has been on a fully vegan diet for most of her adult life. Expect the 450 square-foot space to dish out a variety of handheld items like a vegan gyro wrap, a Cubano, and their take on a Crunch Wrap, as well as a selection of salads, bowls, and side dishes.
