San Diego Magazine Tries To Revive After Going Dark When The City Needed Them Most, But Do We Even Want Them Back?

June 12, 2020

An email from San Diego Magazine with the subject: "We Are Back and We Are Here for You" landed in our inbox this week. This comes after the publication went mostly dark at the very beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic when small businesses around the county needed their support most. Many speculated the magazine had folded for good, yet here they are, making their valiant return hoping to revive and collect ad revenue. Coupling the convenient, self-serving desertion of the San Diego restaurant community with a deep dive into the owner/CEO's Twitter that reveals him to be an outspoken conservative who rallied hard against Black Lives Matter advocates, so we ask - do we really want San Diego Magazine back?

Stream of consciousness this morning:

It strikes me now that in 'normal' times, every black American risks their life every time they leave their homes. They risk being attacked, arrested, killed, lynched, for the crime of being black while driving, while jogging, while watching birds. Hell, lives are at risk even at home, ask Botham Jean.

Those were 'normal' times.

Where Do We Go From Here?

June 1, 2020

What am I supposed to write about today? This site started when my partner and I first moved to San Diego as a means of self-motivation to explore the local food scene. It evolved into hospitality news and event promotion. Now, what do we talk about? We have reached a period in our collective history when it seems completely obtuse to write about anything other than the systemic injustices that have led to our nation's divide and the tumultuous situation we are now in. How do we make sense of it and where do we go from here?

La Mesa Leaders Were Wholly Complicit In Their City's Chaos

May 31, 2020

A week of protests and rioting following George Floyd's well-publicized murder in Minneapolis, MN, culminated in a fiery Saturday "Hell Night" around the United States. Leaders in San Diego's La Mesa were in a better position than most precincts to demonstrate apologetic sympathy, following an evidently wrongful arrest of a young man that went viral earlier in the week, yet they chose to do the opposite, escalating violence by firing tear gas and rubber bullets into crowds of protestors. Shame on La Mesa City & their police department. You are complicit in the damage that occurred in your community.
