Cohn Restaurant Group To Replicate Coaster Saloon Concept In East Mission Valley | Coaster Tavern To Open By Year's End

October 12, 2018

Earlier this year, San Diego's Cohn Restaurant Group (Coasterra, Corvette Diner, The Prado) purchased the 5,485 square foot, 1950s-era building and adjacent lot that last housed Junk House Gastropub in East Mission Valley  and initially used it as a commissary kitchen for the company's 20+ restaurants. The space is now in the process of being transformed into a second incarnation of Coaster Saloon, a Mission Beach mainstay that the Cohn's purchased in summer 2017.

Built in the 1950s on a 43,124 square-foot lot, the building at 5351 Adobe Falls Road in East San Diego County was the home of Nicolosi’s Italian Restaurant for more than 50 years and was remodeled prior to its April 2018 acquisition by the Cohn Restaurant Group for the price of $1,850,000. The Cohns are in the process of renovating the building to make it into Coaster Tavern, an offshoot of Mission Beach's Coaster Saloon concept that the company purchased from the Renna family in June 2017.

Coaster Tavern will serve a similar, barbecue-centric menu as that developed by Chef Tim Eylens for Coaster Saloon, with the addition of California rotisserie chicken, healthy grain bowls, and salads. We have been big fans of Coaster since Chef Tim entered the kitchen. Some of our favorites include the chicken tenders, which we think may be the most delicious in town, and the Kuba, an amazing version of a Cubano sandwich.

The Cohn Restaurant Group is also in the process of developing a 25,000 square foot Draft Republic Brewing Co. brewery and restaurant in La Mesa, as well as a new concept at 8720 Ariva Court in Kearny Mesa called Ariva Cafe. In addition, the company is believed to be backing a restaurant from the former Daniel Boulud protégé, Chef Travis Swikard, who was spotted with CRG Corporate Chef & Partner Deborah Scott at this past weekend's Valle Food & Wine Festival.

Coaster Tavern is expected to open as early as December 2018. For more information about the Cohn Restaurant Group and its concepts, visit cohnrestaurants.com.
