The string of 2020 San Diego restaurant closures will continue as Cohn Restaurant Group will soon shutter its Little Italy Latin American eatery Indigo Grill after more than two decades in business.
Chef Deborah Scott opened the first incarnation of Indigo Grill in 1994 but that branch closed in less than two years. After partnering with the Cohn Restaurant Group for the opening of now-closed Kemo Sabe in Hillcrest, the team reopened Indigo Grill in 2001 a block north from its previous location in Little Italy. In 2014, the restaurant received an extensive renovation costing approximately $500,000.
"As was Kemo Sabe, Indigo Grill has been a trusted friend to me over the years," commented Cohn Restaurant Group Corporate Chef and Partner Deborah Scott. "I met David and Lesley at my first Indigo Grill, and the huge success we enjoyed afforded me the opportunities which have come since. I certainly owe that restaurant much. Also, all the friends I have made along the way have made it especially memorable."
Rumor has it the owner of the building that houses Indigo Grill, Jim Barone of nearby Bar One, wants to open a new eatery in the space so Cohn Restaurant Group chose to shut down rather than face increased rent payments. Indigo Grill will host several farewell dinners with Chef Deborah leading up to the February 9 closure date.
Cohn Restaurant Group also recently shuttered Blue Point Coastal Cuisine in downtown San Diego after 24 years in business and the space will soon be home to Saltwater Fine Dining Cuisine, a seafood-focused restaurant from the owner of Greystone The Steakhouse and Osetra The Fishouse. Cohn Group's Gaslamp Strip Club also closed within the last month, with ownership stating the closure was for a remodel although we surmise the location will be rebranded into a new concept.
