Tijuana-Style Hot Dog Sensation Doggos Gus Opening In Downtown San Diego

January 22, 2023

A specialist in Tijuana-style bacon-wrapped hot dogs, Doggos Gus is opening within The Lost Abbey brewery's The Church tasting room in San Diego's East Village.

In 2017, Gustavo Tonella took his mobile hot dog stand and installed it within now-defunct craft beer-centric Twisted Taps, taking over the food component at the then family-friendly bar and kitchen. Tonella, who started Doggos Gus in 2010, left the Twisted Taps kitchen in early summer 2018 to shift his focus to catering and events. In late 2019, Tonella moved into the quaint space at 805 Seacoast Avenue previously occupied by Imperial Beach Buns (and IB Tacos before that) and reopened his brick-and-mortar restaurant in a new neighborhood.  Unfortunately for the restaurant, the building Doggos Gus had been sited is scheduled to be demolished for the construction of condos, so Tonella was forced to close his brick and mortar location in Imperial Beach this past summer.

"Ladies and gentlemen, hold on to your hotdog buns and grab your michelada cups, because the day has finally arrived!", wrote Gustavo Tonella on Doggos Gus's social media channels. After months of scouring the city for the perfect location, we are thrilled to announce that Doggosgus has found a new home in the heart of East Village."

Doggos Gus will soon begin operating as a pop-up eatery within Lost Abbey's The Church on J Street in downtown San Diego's East Village. Eventually, Doggos Gus will begin serving from the property's onsite kitchen. Expect a menu of bacon-wrapped Tijuana-style hotdogs served on steamed Bolillo buns, as well as burgers, nachos, fries, Mexican street corn, and Micheladas.

Doggos Gus will soon begin operating at 1313 J Street in San Diego's East Village. For more information, visit doggosgus.com.
