The Balboa & Pizzeria Luigi Teams Join Forces For Garlic Shack Revamp | Sister Ray's To Open Soon In San Diego's Sherman Heights

January 4, 2019

The teams behind two San Diego hotspots, The Balboa Bar & Grill & Pizzeria Luigi's, have teamed up for the opening of Sister Ray's - a "low-brow" neighborhood watering hole centered around chili, dogs, burgers, and tall cans set to debut next week in the space that last housed Garlic Shack in Sherman Heights.

From Tom Logsdon & Kevin Stewart of The Balboa Bar & Grill, which is nearly ready to open a second branch in Chula Vista, and Luigi Agostini & Kevin Gist of the popular Pizzeria Luigi - Sister Ray's will open as early as Wednesday, January 9. The eatery's menu will be centered around house made chilis, spiral-cut deep-fried chili cheese dogs, and classic flat top burgers like those available at The Balboa. Aiming to have something for everyone, there will also be a healthy array of vegetarian and vegan options. Sister Ray's will have a few taps devoted to local craft beer and a selection of domestic tall cans such as Hamms, Olympia, and Schlitz. There will be a quaint, 800 square-foot interior dining area with a new bar, as well as 2 existing patios framing the outside corner.

"And as far as the name 'Sister Ray' is concerned, we were researching the origins of chili and one of the most far flung stories was of a nun (Sister Mary of Agreda) that was claimed to have an out of body experience where she was transported to the Americas and given the recipe in a vision," explained Sister Ray's co-owner Tom Logsdon. "Us, a bunch of irreverent (and some of us bearded) chili fans wanted to play around with that idea and ran with it."

Sister Ray's sits at 549 25th Street in San Diego's Sherman Heights neighborhood.
