Over the years, husband and wife restaurateurs James & Jenny Pyo have founded such area eateries as Love Boat Sushi (San Marcos and Oceanside), Harumama restaurants (Little Italy, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Point Loma, La Jolla) Blue Ocean Robata & Sushi Bar (Carlsbad, La Jolla), Blue Smoke Sushi (Fashion Valley Mall,) two Pokewan locations, andHarumama-offshoot Teriyaki & Bao in Carlsbad. In 2019, they opened their most ambitious project yet, a combination concept Harumama Noodles & Buns and Blue Ocean Robata & Sushi in the 5,000 square foot space perched above La Jolla Shores that previously housed The Hake.
The Pyos have signed a lease to take over the 4,434 square foot restaurant space that last housed Smokeyard BBQ & Chop Shop in Westfield UTC mall for a new branch of Blue Ocean Sushi. Expect the space to be transformed into a contemporary sushi eatery and offer a specialized menu of Japanese-American cuisine, including appetizers, sushi, fried rice, bao buns, soups, salads, and a wide array of entrees. There will also be a full bar with cocktails, beer, wine and sake.
