Market On 8th Food Hall Under New Management & Revamping Eateries In San Diego's South Bay

August 1, 2024

Market on 8th Food Hall in San Diego's South Bay is now under new management and set to introduce a fresh array of onsite eateries.

After two years in development and substantial delays due to the pandemic, Novo Brazil Brewing co-founder Joel Tubao opened Market On 8th food hall in October 2021 in San Diego's South County community of National City. The 11,000 square-foot space features around a dozen unique food and artisan goods vendors, as well as a central bar.

Market On 8th is now being operated by Sonora, MX-born restaurateur Rogelio Canez, who owns Sonora Express Meat Boutique in Tijuana, Chez Loma in Coronado and La Central Urban Grill in Chula Vista, a concept he once had sited inside the market. Canez also previously owned La Catrina Tapas & Cantina and Burrology in North Park. Canez is bringing in a whole host of new chefs to the food hall, including Baja chef Luis Gomez, who was once the Executive Chef of Javier Plascencia's Misión 19 in Tijuana and also worked under celebrity chef, Michael Mina. Gomez will oversee a Mexicali-style Chinese-Mexican concept inside Market on 8th.

"I’m bringing two chefs from Mexico City, an Italian guy, carnitas and now will be a place 100% run by chefs that own their restaurants," explained Canez. "I really want all the people to eat a nice steak for $30, the best smash burger for $10 and the new concept will be based on live music, modern food and mezcal!"

Market on 8th will also house La Parrila del Che, a meat-forward eatery from Chef Dante Ferrero, an Argentine chef from Mexico City known for whole animal cooking and recognized as one of the World's 50 Best Chefs in Mexico. Chef Antonio Liui, who has around 11 restaurants in Valle de Guadalupe, Tijuana, and Otay Ranch, will be opening two spots: a brunch eatery named Coleta and Poppy Burgers.

Chef Darío Villagómez, who created the carnitas for Villa Moreliana at Grand Central Market in Los Angeles, will have a carnitas spot called Carnitas Quiroga, offering tacos, tortas, and more. Kiko's Place mariscos food truck will also open a stall inside, as will Chef Guillermo Ivan who will open a Neapolitan pizza spot called Marcella. Additionally, Barkadas Taproom will be remodeled and rebranded to focus on Mexican agave spirits like tequila and mezcal.

Ping Yang Thai and Donburi Rice Bowls are the only two concepts that will remain from the previous roster of eateries. There is still one food stall in the process of being filled. Although Market on 8th will remain open during normal hours, they are working on scheduling a grand reopening party with all new concepts to take place in early September.

Market on 8th is located at 41 East 8th Street in San Diego's South Bay community of National City. For more information, visit marketon8th.com
