5th Annual Baja Culinary Fest Takes Over Tijuana This October 8-11 With A Taste Of Countryside & Sea

The Baja Culinary Fest returns to Tijuana for its fifth year from Thursday, October 8 through Sunday, October 11, offering a bustling line up of dinners, seminars, panels, workshops, culinary contests and deliciousness, as well as a free-to-enter tasting showcase with some of Baja's best wine, beer and food vendors at the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT). San Diego's top chefs will also join forces with some of Baja's best for a series of multi-course meals during this year's event. With the theme "A Taste of Countryside and Sea," this year the festival will focus on sustainability and responsible product sourcing while spotlighting the best ingredients in Baja.

After almost 20 years on the air, San Diego's 102.1 KPRI has announced that it will be no more, citing the modern challenges of the radio business for independent broadcasters. It has accepted an offer from Rocklin, CA-based Educational Media Foundation, which typically operates radio networks specializing in adult contemporary Christian music, and the format will change immediately.

Jinya Ramen Bar opens its first San Diego location in Pacific Beach today at 11am at 825 Garnet Avenue in the space that formerly housed Oggi's Express and Naraya Thai before that. The eatery is a welcome addition to the neighborhood, offering 20 beers on tap, a selection of wine and sake and Japanese izakaya favorites including a variety of ramen and small plates. Executive Chef Jason Knibb of NINE-TEN in La Jolla is doing the San Diego area proud, making it to the final 16 in a national breakfast recipe competition. The Hometown Breakfast Battle is a national chef recipe competition that started with 135 chefs from across the country who have battled it out to create America’s best breakfast in honor of the 135th Anniversary of the Thomas’ brand. Local fans have through Sunday, Oct. 4 to vote online to ensure Jason makes it into the next round of competition that narrows the pool from 16 chefs to just eight.

It looks like Waypoint Public has a thing for Top Chef contestants! Top Chef Season 7 participant, Amanda Baumgarten, was the founding executive chef at Waypoint until her departure earlier this year for Chicago, but the North Park, beer-centric eatery has found a suitable replacement, tapping Season 5 contestant Rich Sweeney to take the reigns. Formerly the executive chef of Florent Restaurant & Lounge and now-defunct R Gang Eatery, Sweeney comes to Waypoint with a plethora of experience and intends to redesign the menu in the coming months. Owners John Pani and Brian Jensen have also indicated that new Waypoint locations are in San Diego's future for 2016.
