The 23rd installment of “Mama’s Day” returns to the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine on Friday, May 9 from 6:30-9:30pm. The extraordinary culinary poolside affair is a major source of funding for Mama’s Kitchen - a local nonprofit organization which cooks and delivers hot, nutrition-specific meals free of charge to men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer throughout San Diego County.

Stone Brewing Co. Releases First Beer in Stone Spotlight Series | Experience Spröcketbier

Last year, the Brew Crew of Stone Brewing Co. participated in an intradepartmental competition dubbed the Stone Spotlight Series, in which teams of two competed for the opportunity to have a beer they devised brewed, packaged and distributed nationally. Stone wanted to “spotlight” the talented individuals that make up the Stone brewing team and encouraged them to explore what craft beer is truly about: ingenuity, creativity and...well, having fun. Beginning today, the craft beer company is proud to unveil the inaugural prize-winning beer in the Stone Spotlight Series: Spröcketbier, a black rye Kölsch-style ale. Fans across the U.S. may purchase the limited-release beer in 22-ounce bottles and on draft at retailers, restaurants and bars in select markets nationwide.
Turquoise Cellars Teams with Bare Bones Broth and Heart & Trotter Butchery for Paleo Partnership Dinner | Kicks Off Health-Conscious Spring Cuisine on April 27

On Sunday, April 27, local Paleo advocates will come together at Turquoise Cellars to demystify the aptly named “Caveman Diet,” with their individual farm-to-table approach. With speeches by the butchers, chefs and Paleo experts, guests will be able to enjoy a primal, health focused menu while learning about the process and ideal preparation of a grass-fed, Paleo diet. In honor of spring, the all-Paleo menu will feature lamb from the Heart & Trotter Butchery and be a collaboration between Turquoise Cellars Chef Taylor Martin-Funk and Bare Bones Broth chef and owner Ryan Harvey. Guests will be treated to a lamb meatball upon arrival, and each course will be accompanied by wine pairings hand selected by Rafael Peterson of Turquoise Cellars, Certified Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers.

Strawberry Jam returns on Saturday, April 26 from 10am-4pm. This annual Suzie’s Farm U-Pick event, is a free, family-friendly, springtime celebration where attendees can get their hands dirty and pick their own organic strawberries. Suzie’s At Sunset will be filled with the aroma of fresh strawberries as guests enjoy delicious local, organic cuisine by San Diego-based food trucks Green Truck and God Save The Cuisine (attendees are also welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy on the Farm), as well as hands on workshops and cooking demos focused on the red, ripe and juicy summertime fruit. There will also be live, high-energy bluegrass performances by local groups, Plow and The Big Decisions taking place on the outdoor stage.

Set to open this month, Union Kitchen and Tap Gaslamp is the newest venture for proprietor Eric Leitstein. His popular Encinitas restaurant of the same name has been a staple since 2011. The new restaurant, located at 333 5th Avenue in the Gaslamp District, has significantly more square footage than its counterpart to the north. Union Kitchen and Tap Gaslamp features a patio and two huge garage-style doors that open at street level.

Cafe21 with little to no promotion, quietly opened the doors this week to its newest location in the former space occupied by Croce's in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. While the new space features the same locally sourced, organic, creative cuisine created by Chef Leyla Javadov at her University Heights location, the new Cafe21 will now be able to further accommodate the scores of people that find the wait worth it every week.

Davanti Enoteca’s Chef Christopher Vera-Tudela (of Little Italy) and Chef Michael Nogera (of the Del Mar Highlands) have introduced garden-inspired dishes and fresh seafood plates to the menus of Davanti Enoteca in Little Italy and the Del Mar Highlands Town Center this month. Both Davanti Enoteca locations will offer seasonal plates like Rock Shrimp Salad with spring peas and baby heirloom tomatoes and Capesante e Fave, seared Diver scallops over fava beans and pea tendrils in a guanciale vinaigrette. The Little Italy and Del Mar Highlands’ chefs will also introduce dishes exclusive to their respective location.

Puesto at The Headquarters is teaming up with three of San Diego's favorite restaurants for a taco collaboration to launch Puesto's new Local Thursdays. Puesto has tapped, CUCINA Urbana, Herringbone and Sea & Smoke to each create a one-of-a-kind taco available exclusively on Thursdays in May at Puesto. Each restaurant took a favorite dish from their menus and morphed it into a taco using Puesto's fresh house-made tortillas. In addition to the three tacos, Puesto will also offer all their local beers at half-off on Thursday nights, which currently includes Modern Times Saison, Saint Archer Blonde, Green Flash Hop Head Red, Alesmith Nut Brown, Ballast Point Sculpin IPA, and more.

Two weeks ago, on Sunday, March 30, more than 12,000 people filled 2.5 miles of streets in Pacific Beach to walk, skate, bike, scoot, dance, skip, and even do yoga during San Diego’s second-annual CicloSDias. San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, the main sponsor of the open-streets celebration, continues to receive thanks and positive feedback about CicloSDias and the healthy impact it had on the Pacific Beach community.

America's Finest City was once again proudly represented at this year's World Beer Cup, where San Diegans won 11 medals, including 4 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze, as well as the title of World Beer Cup Champion Brewery and Brewmaster in the Mid-Sized Brewing Company category. The awards were presented at the conclusion of Craft Brewers Conference & Brew Expo America in Denver, CO.
