Where's The New Year's Celebration, San Diego??

January 1, 2016

This is the first time we spent New Year's Eve/Day in San Diego since moving here in 2009 (with my family from the east coast no less), and we had no idea that there was not a live televised celebration akin to the New Year's Eve Ball Drop in New York City's Time Square. We were surprised and felt cheapened that the only televised New Year's event was just a replay of the east coast spectacular. Why is that? Based on my rooftop vantage point in Mission Beach, there was hardly a celebration at all. No SeaWorld fireworks, no giant street party, just some night club and boat bashes murmuring in the distance. The lack of any visual affirmation of the near year in San Diego was all too sad, if you ask me. We're better than that.

Yard House Announces Permanent Closure Of Downtown San Diego Location After Extensive Flood Damage

A literal shitty situation has resulted in the closure one of downtown's original beer meccas. Yard House has announced that its downtown San Diego location at 1023 4th Avenue and Broadway will remain permanently closed following a recent flood which caused extensive damage to the restaurant. The downtown location, which opened in 2003 as the 4th Yard House restaurant in the United Stated (there are now over 60), closed November 1 due to a water main issue that caused a sewage tsunami within the restaurant, even displacing numerous residents of the Viridian Lofts, situated directly above the restaurant.

San Diego's Biggest Openings And Most Surprising Closings Of 2015

December 7, 2015

Quite astonishingly, another year is almost behind us! San Diego's hospitality industry certainly had its ups and downs in 2015. We mourned the loss of Hodad's exuberant owner Mike 'Bossman' Hardin. We saw that San Diego's East Village still has a lot of growing to do before it can support top notch eateries. The term 'craft' was applied to EVERYTHING. We had many grand restaurant openings and regrettable closings. In this post, we run down the 10 biggest restaurant openings and 10 most surprising closings of 2015.
